The paradox of urban development becomes evident when achievements in welfare indicators do not necessarily correlate with adolescents’ psychosocial resilience. South Tangerang City is classified as a region with a very high Human Development Index (HDI) (84.16 in 2024) (Statistics Indonesia of South Tangerang City, 2025), while national reports indicate that experiences of violence among children and adolescents remain a serious issue (KPAI, 2025). In this context, the habitual practice of congregational prayer in mosques has the potential to function as a spiritual–social practice that fosters self-discipline, inner calm, and peer support.
This study is a quantitative preliminary study employing a cross-sectional survey design to map perceptions of the contribution of congregational prayer to emotion management and crisis management among junior high school (SMP/MTs) adolescents. The participants consisted of 10 adolescents actively involved in activities at Al Musthofa Mosque, Serua, Ciputat (South Tangerang City), selected through purposive sampling. The instrument was a five-point Likert-scale questionnaire comprising five items on emotion management and five items on crisis management, developed based on the logic of emotion regulation and religious coping. Data analysis was conducted using descriptive statistics (mean item scores and response distributions).
The results indicate a tendency toward positive responses across both constructs: congregational prayer was perceived as helping to promote calmness, reduce anger reactivity, enhance patience, and facilitate decision-making when facing problems. This study underscores the relevance of Islamic psychology and social-behavioral approaches in positioning the mosque as a habituation space with strong potential to strengthen adolescents’ emotional regulation and coping mechanisms. Practically, these preliminary findings encourage collaboration among schools, mosques, and parents through programs that institutionalize congregational prayer accompanied by emotional literacy and violence-prevention initiatives. However, inferential testing of effects requires further studies with larger samples, measurements of habituation intensity (frequency/compliance), and regression or SEM analytical models.
